Learn all the basics of Italian cooking techniques from seasoned chef Rita Lucherini while enjoying the local wines and traditions this area of “La Garfagnana” has to offer. During your time here, we will visit our local markets and wander the unique streets of Barga, known as one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy. Together we will work to prepare our meals then sit as a family to enjoy them along with wine, music and song. Relax the evenings away as you immerse yourself in the Tuscan lifestyle. This is not one of those bus tour vacations where you are expected to follow a ridged group schedule, Rita is accommodating to her guests’ interests and whims. Better yet, Rita is fluent in both English and Italian, so you can relax into the Italian culture wherever she takes you.

Description

Have fun and join our cookery and wine tasting holiday in this beautiful part of Northern Tuscany. Combine cooking and wine tasting and learn all the basic Italian cooking techniques and traditions la bella Garfagnana and Serchio Valley have to offer.

We will visit our local market, wander the streets of Barga, known as one of the prettiest villages in Italy and we shall visit Lucca. The most part of the time there are concerts, folk festivals, outdoor food festivals (where you can savour typical products), theatre, Barga Jazz and the Opera Barga.

My background is indeed a typical one. My parents and grandparents, originally from the Barga area, emigrated to Scotland where like many other Italian emigrants they opened their own catering business.

During my informative years, I gradually immersed myself in the culture, customs and traditions of my parents and grandparents and in particular their culinary cultures. I studied the ancient secrets and techniques of the traditional Tuscan cooking and kept alive certain recipes that lost popularity in the fast food era. A vegetable sformato, castagnaccio and necci are just some of the local delicacies of which later generations have little perception, even those born in Italy.

I have now been in Barga for almost 30 years running my Bed and Breakfast and apartments together with my children and have now opened my cooking school.

Your cooking holiday includes:

  • Transfers to and from Pisa Airport;
  • All local transfers;
  • Accommodation;
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner;
  • Wine and soft drinks included at meals;
  • Two 4-hour cookery sessions, including wine;
  • Trips to Barga, Lucca, Pisa, local market;
  • Wine tasting with Alex at La Mezzaluna wine bar.
  • Enjoy your first glimpse of Italy as you arrive at the Pisa airport.
  • Travel to Residence La Mezzaluna (1 hour 15 minutes) where you will enjoy a glass of wine and meet your Italian host and chef Rita Lucherini to talk about the week’s activities.
  • Then, settle and relax in your home-away-from-home.
  • In the evening, chat with the locals at La Mezzaluna wine bar while enjoying some wine and dinner

  • After breakfast, you will head to the medieval village of Barga where you can admire its ancient streets and its 11th-century Cathedral. Barga offers picturesque views of the Serchio valley.
  • Savour a light lunch in Barga at a local café.
  • Back at the kitchen, you will have your first cooking lesson. Put on your La Mezzaluna apron and get ready, today’s lesson is the art of pasta making! We will spend 4 hours creating our pasta from scratch, then cook it up with the delicious Italian sauces that you prepare as well. Perhaps we’ll even have time to make a dessert of tiramisu.
  • Relax on the veranda as we savour the delicious meal that we prepared together.

  • After breakfast, we will head to Pisa where we can admire the ancient Piazza Miracoli with the cathedral and famous leaning tower;
  • In the afternoon, we will head to Lucca where we can wander the unique shops and admire the historic cathedrals and squares;
  • Enjoy lunch together at a local restaurant;
  • In the evening we will head back to La Mezzaluna to enjoy a BBQ together.

  • After breakfast, we will travel to Castelnuovo Garfagnana to wander around the sprawling market and have lunch in a local wine and grocery store;
  • Back at La Mezzaluna it’s time to get your apron on for lesson number 2. Today’s lesson is dedicated to the fine art of making pizza and focaccia cooked in our wood-fired brick oven;
  • Hot from the oven, you will savour your meal as Alex entertains us all with his beautiful singing and live music on the veranda.
